Explanation A shepherd from the Central Rhodopes with a ram, leader of the flock (kyosém [Bulg.]). The shepherd’s clothing includes: a shawl (shel [Bulg.]), cap (terlík [Bulg.]), and leggings (kalchéte [Bulg.]). The shepherd is carrying weaponry such as a long rifle (boylía [Bulg.]), a pistol (pishtóv [Bulg.]), a knife (karákulak [Bulg.]), a cartridge-box (palaska [Bulg.]) and a powder-box (barútnitsa [Bulg.]). The original of this photo was taken in 1902 by Krum Savov.
